Legos come to mind everytime I think about where the impulse to use technology well comes from. In a different generation it might have been wooden blocks or erector sets or model trains or puzzles that would serve as the same kind of compass. That impulse is there. Putting the pieces together… that’s the link. Each person has their own comfort level with technology. It is a mix of ability and interest that shapes how someone might or might not be able to make their way through the maze of possibilities when choosing, using or fixing tech based activities. When technology works, the subset of people who are happy is a lot larger than the one we discern when it doesn’t. Two of the more prominent groups if the latter occurs, are: People who don’t care why that thing isn’t working, they just want “it” or another “it” to work right now, or, people who are now more interested in the thing since it doesn’t work and they just can’t wait to tear it apart to figure it out. These are extremes, and there are many shades of grey in between these two groups. In my world, I’ve had to deal with this human techno interfacing from many perspectives. As a composer/musician I experienced the rapid 1growth of the juxtaposition of music creation and audio recording since the middle of the last century. As a producer/engineer, I have been a part of many collaborations of artists and technologists where the final product was indeed more striking than the sum of the parts involved would seem to presage. As an educator/researcher I have taken what I know to help me glean what I really need to know from all the things that I don’t. After a long respite, I find myself once again with one foot in music and the other in technology. I have had the benefit of interacting with old and new friends, peers and mentors and have picked up the path somewhat disoriented because technology rarely sleeps (unlike me). So, I have questions; others I have spoken with have questions, too. Some of these questions will have answers but many more will probably only awaken other questions. That’s all good… That is why this haven is here. Welcome…
