Q?

<|•|>

This space is the place where readers can pose questions. All questions will be considered and answered whenever possible. As time goes on, hopefully, readers can contribute answers as well as questions. Acceptable topics for queries are those related to the concurrent nexus where music, computers and technology meet, just like the masthead says. Thank you.

    Thanks V,
I have duplicated my software programs into another computer and added seagate external hard drives also for downloading sounds, loops, plug-ins, etc. Already making good progress! I had to schedule this on a separate day from sequencing.(ha) Got a little too inspired going through new sounds and loops. It was like trying to cook with out eating for days! ha! Thanks again! Godbless!

    Hello Victor,
This is an awsome website of inspiring information that can be applied now and in the future! One of my down falls when it came to creating music was that my thinking process would limit how I did things by repetition, example laying down drum tracks, Bass tracks the same old way etc. I know repetition is the breakfast of champions but I needed new innovative ways to lay down material. I then came across Reason software where I fell in love with the way I could come up with ideas adding so much more to my thought process for music sequencing by playing around with controls. I love to sound design and program while reason 4 and nuendo 3 is mostly what I use for everything. Are there any suggestions for reason 4 that I dont know about to enhance that area or other software plug-ins etc. that I may benefit better from?

      Backatcha Alex,
I know what you mean about how easy it is to fall into a rut when you’re basically doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. Wouldn’t matter much if you were doing the same song over and over, but obviously that’s not what you’re trying to do. It is a hard balance to keep; it takes a lot of practice to get good at what you do but you have to keep learning new things to keep the interest up for yourself and your audience. I think the trick is to try to make the way you work less like a circle and more like an ever expanding ellipse. What I mean is, have your basic setup and way of working down well enough to not slow you down when you have ideas you need to record. But also build in time and space to try or even add new sounds and methods as a regular part of your work process. For you this might look like: Sometimes you figure out how to work as if Nuendo and Reason were one program but other times you force yourself to work as if you only have Reason or only Nuendo and deal with the limitations of each program in your process. Another thing is, always be scavenging for new sounds, loops and plug-ins. Loops and samples that you can use in Reason are available everywhere. And though my knowledge of Nuendo is pretty thin at this point, I do seem to recall that it works with VST plug-ins. That opens up a wide range of stuff to try. I would make one other recommendation. If possible install duplicates of your main work programs on a different partition or separate hard drive with its own system so that you can experiment freely with this stuff without screwing up your main work machine. With regards to Reason 4 – dig, dig, dig! There is so much in the program that the more you just poke around without fear the more inspiring turns you will end up taking. And watch every tutorial video on the Prophead site and the web (Google). When I got a Novation SL controller my use of Reason jumped eons because all of the faders sliders and pads were mapped to the devices in Reason automatically, giving this old school mind beaucoup things to twist, twiddle and pound in real time. That’s how I roll; your mileage may vary. You’ve got a pretty powerful environment to create within. I hope some of these ideas can point you in a direction that is helpful. On the other hand it sounds like you are well on the way to “Masters of the Universe” class. Good luck with this!
